Agence française de développement (AFD) has approved a €650 000 (about R12-million) grant to facilitate a two-year technical cooperation programme between RTE international and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA).

This collaboration between the French and South African electricity transmission operators has been formalised through a memorandum of understanding involving Eskom, RTE international, AFD, and NTCSA, signed on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town.

The grant is being financed by the French National Treasury and will promote the transfer of know-how and technical cooperation on strengthening the grid's resilience as higher shares of variable renewable energy sources are integrated into the South African electricity supply industry.

RTE international and the NTCSA will mobilise their respective experts to collaborate through a series of workshops, study tours in France and South Africa, and in-depth research projects and pilot initiatives.

The research topics include renewable-energy integration and system stability, AI, machine learning and advanced analytics, high voltage direct current power transmission and telecommunications.
